Tired of IKEA? Five furniture brands in the Home Planner catalog, from the Egg chair to an everyday sofa, and how to find them in the app.

You open a design app, search for a sofa, and the first results look like IKEA. It is easy to decide that you cannot furnish a room without it. You can: the sofa that fits your room may not be Swedish at all.

This post looks at IKEA alternatives you can place in your own plan in Home Planner: five brands, their best-known pieces, and the way to find them in the catalog.

Why we default to IKEA

For years, IKEA has been the "fast food" of interiors: quick, affordable and reliable. So when you open an app like Home Planner, it is easy to assume that everything in it comes from Scandinavia.

It does not.

What’s actually inside the Home Planner app?

More than 2,000 real furniture brands and material suppliers, from global companies to small workshops. Sleek office furniture, contemporary European design and comfortable classics sit in the same catalog.

Which iconic furniture designs can you find there?

Chairs and sofas that shaped modern living: the Egg chair, the Eames Lounge Chair, the Camaleonda sofa and the Aeron chair. If you follow interiors, you have probably seen these pieces without knowing their names. They come from the five brands below, and all five brands appear in the Home Planner catalog. The models available for each brand can change, so search by brand name.

1. BoConcept

Modena sofa. Designed by Morten Georgsen for BoConcept. It combines organic forms with a minimal look, for style and comfort.

Ottawa modular sofa. Designed by Karim Rashid: a sculptural Scandinavian piece with flowing lines, organic curves and twig-like legs. You configure the modules, and it has USB ports.

Why it works: you customise the configuration, and the design stays modern and minimal. That suits a room whose layout may change.

2. B&B Italia

Camaleonda sofa. A modular sofa by Mario Bellini from 1970, now reissued. The name comes from the chameleon: the sofa changes its shape.

Why it lasts: you mix and match the modules. The look is bold, the seat is very comfortable, and one sofa can take many shapes.

3. Fritz Hansen

Egg chair. Designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958. Its sculptural, enclosing shape wraps around you and gives you privacy.

Why it lasts: a Scandinavian design classic that is sculptural, cosy and easy to recognise.

4. Herman Miller

Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. Designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1956. Moulded plywood and leather; the chair is in the permanent collection of MoMA.

Aeron chair. Launched in 1994, designed by Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick. It changed office seating:

  • breathable Pellicle mesh;
  • PostureFit SL lumbar support;
  • 8Z ergonomic zones;
  • three sizes;
  • a remastered version from 2016 with improved tilt and support.

Why it leads: ergonomics and a clean form in one chair. Use it for a home office or any room where you work.

Are there furniture brands like IKEA in the catalog?

Yes. Ashley is the closest to IKEA in this list: affordable, comfortable and widely available.

5. Ashley Furniture

Darcy sofa and Bladen sofa. Affordable, cosy sofas, popular across North America for their simple style and everyday comfort.

Why it is practical: easy to buy, comfortable and made for everyday life at home.

How do you find designer furniture brands in Home Planner?

Open Catalog → More → Brands (A–Z) and choose a brand by name. Then:

  1. Select the brand you want.
  2. Narrow the results with filters.
  3. To browse by look instead of by name, use the style filters, for example Scandinavian, Industrial, Modern or Luxury.

From a default choice to your own taste

The range goes from ergonomic Herman Miller office chairs to soft Ligne Roset seating. With that much choice, IKEA stops being the automatic answer. Your room starts to show your own taste, not a copy of one catalog.

Home Planner is not only an IKEA tool. It is a catalog of real brands that you can place in your own plan.

Try it on your own plan

A sofa is easier to judge in your own room than in a product photo. Create a 2D or 3D floor plan in Home Planner, or scan your room with AR. Then furnish it with real brands and see how the pieces fit. You can also let AI redesign a photo of your room.
