Rug Placement Guide: 3 Rules for Shape, Size and Furniture

Three rules for rug placement: match the shape to the furniture, pick the right size, and connect the furniture to the rug.

You bought a rug you like, laid it down, and the room looks worse. Usually one of three things is wrong: the shape, the size, or the distance from the furniture. This rug placement guide fixes all three, for a dining table, a bed and a sofa.

Rule 1: match the shape to the furniture

Round rug placement: what goes on it?

Round furniture. A round table belongs on a round rug, and a rectangular sofa or table on a rectangular rug. The cover image shows both: a round table on a round rug, and a long table on a long rug, each marked «Do». The two «Don't» versions swap them.

Why it works: the rug repeats the outline of the furniture, so the two read as one group. When the shapes differ, the corners of a long table stick out over a round rug, and the eye sees two objects that do not belong together.

There is one exception. In a room where everything is straight, a round rug in a free corner, with no furniture on it, can soften the lines. Keep it away from the table and the sofa, or the shapes compete again.

Rule 2: pick a size that fits the furniture

A rug that is too small is the most common rug mistake. It floats in the middle of the floor and makes the furniture around it look larger.

Under a dining table, the rug must be bigger than the table on every side. A common guide is about 60 cm (24 in) beyond each edge. Why: chairs move back when people stand up, and a chair with two legs on the rug and two off it wobbles and catches the edge.

A rug also marks a zone. In a room that is a living room and a dining room at once, two rugs show where one zone ends and the next begins, without a wall.

What is the right rug placement under a bed?

Choose a rug wider than the bed, so it shows on both sides. A common guide is 45–60 cm (18–24 in) on each side. Then your feet land on the rug, not on a cold floor, when you get up. It also marks the sleeping zone.

Look at the two «Don't» rooms: one rug is barely wider than the bed, and the other lies mostly past the foot of the bed.

The rug usually starts under the lower two thirds of the bed and leaves the bedside tables on the bare floor. That way the tables stand level and the rug shows where you step.

Rule 3: connect the furniture to the rug

How do you place furniture on a rug?

Let them overlap: front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or the whole set. Both work. What does not work is a rug that sits alone in front of the sofa, with no furniture touching it.

The «Do» rooms keep the sofa and the armchair on the same rug. In the «Don't» rooms the rug is too small for the group, or round under a straight sofa.

With front legs only, a smaller rug is enough and the room keeps more bare floor. With the whole set on the rug, the group looks more solid, which helps in a large room where the furniture stands away from the walls.

Common mistake: buying the rug first and the sofa later. Decide where the sofa and chairs go, then measure the rug from the furniture, not from the room.

A quick check before you buy

  1. Shape: does the rug repeat the shape of the main piece of furniture?
  2. Size: is it larger than the table or the bed on every side that people use?
  3. Connection: do the front legs of the seating stand on it?

If the answer is yes three times, the rug will fit.

Try the rug on your plan first

In Home Planner, measure your room, draw a 2D/3D plan, furnish it with branded products, render it, or start from a ready-made layout. Put the rug under the sofa or the bed and check its size against the furniture before you order it.
