Home Planner vs magicplan (2026): Design Studio or Measuring Tool?

Home Planner and magicplan both start from the rooms you live and work in, but they are built for different jobs. Home Planner is an interior design app: you draw a space, furnish it from a catalog of 560,000+ items and render the result. magicplan is a measuring app: you scan a room with your phone and it produces a dimensioned floor plan for reports and estimates.

Every figure in this comparison was checked on 26 October 2026 on the vendors' own pricing and platform pages and in the US App Store. Both apps' weak spots get the same treatment below — including ours.

The short answer

Choose Home Planner if you want to design interiors — furniture, materials, colors and 3D renders — on a phone or a desktop. Choose magicplan if your deliverable is a measured plan of an existing building: its scan-to-plan workflow and its 4.66-star US rating (41,297 ratings) — higher than Home Planner's 4.60 — are built around construction and trade professionals, and the reviews show it.

Which one is right for you?

Home Planner fits when design is the job:

  • You are furnishing or renovating a room and want to see it in 3D before you buy anything.
  • Catalog size matters: 560,000+ furniture and material items against no interior catalog in magicplan.
  • One app for the whole household: Home Planner runs on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows and Mac; magicplan has no Windows or Mac app.
  • You design for fun as well as for work — AI photo redesign and a community of shared designs come with Home Planner.

magicplan fits when measurement is the job:

  • You are a contractor, inspector or real-estate professional who needs measured as-built plans.
  • Laser-meter support and per-project reports and estimates are the deliverable, not the interior.
  • You work on iPhone or iPad only and don't need a desktop app.

Where Home Planner is stronger

A catalog built for designing

Home Planner ships more than 560,000 furniture and material items (the site's own figure). magicplan publishes no interior catalog at all — it draws walls, openings and measurements, not living rooms. If the end result is a furnished interior, one of the two products doesn't do that job.

One app on every screen

Home Planner runs on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows and Mac. magicplan's own App Store listing covers iPhone, iPad and Android; there is no Windows or Mac application (checked 26 October 2026). Households and studios that mix phones and desktops need two tools with magicplan.

Design-first features

AR room scan for consumers, AI floor-plan recognition from a photo, LiDAR and laser-meter support, AI photo redesign and a shared-designs community. magicplan concentrates on capture and measurement; the decorating side is not its goal.

One public pricing page

Every Home Planner tier is listed on one public pricing page with annual and monthly billing. magicplan splits what you pay across an in-app Sketch subscription and separate project-based site plans — and recent reviews (below) show readers tripping over exactly that split.

Where magicplan is stronger

Measurement is the product

magicplan's scan-to-plan pipeline — AR capture, manual corners, laser meters, LiDAR — produces dimensioned plans and auto-generated reports and estimates. Home Planner can scan a room too, but a measured as-built document for a client is magicplan's home turf.

The higher rating, stated as it is

magicplan holds 4.66 stars in the US App Store (41,297 ratings) against Home Planner's 4.60 (46,453), as of 26 October 2026. We show the number as it is: for site-work measurement, users rate magicplan higher.

Trade professionals in the reviews

Electricians, contractors and real-estate investors make up a visible share of magicplan's recent five-star reviews. If your days look like theirs, that track record is worth something.

What users say

We fetched the most recent US App Store reviews for both apps on 26 October 2026 and coded the 60 newest for each by hand; one review can carry several themes.

Theme (60 newest US reviews each)Home Plannermagicplan
Praise: daily designing, catalog, easy start30 of 6024 of 60
Free plan limits / upsell pressure11 of 60—
AI floor-plan recognition misreads dimensions6 of 60—
Scan struggles on complex rooms (sloped ceilings, open plans)—10 of 60
Pricing or billing confusion—7 of 60
Learning curve / unclear UI—7 of 60
Freezes or lost work3 of 604 of 60

The patterns line up with the products: magicplan's complaints cluster where its strength is — capture (complex rooms) and the pricing split. Home Planner's cluster where its model is — the free-to-PRO boundary and AI recognition accuracy.

  • magicplan's fans are tradespeople: “As an electrician this is the best thing I've found” (5 stars).
  • And magicplan's recurring complaint: “They only push the expensive plan. I could not find the $12.99 option” (1 star, October 2026).
  • Home Planner's fans are designers: “Large catalogue” and “they have a lot of stuff” recur across 5- and 4-star reviews.
  • And our own weak spot, in a reviewer's words: “you have to pay for like literally everything” (Home Planner, 4 stars) — 11 of 60 reviews say the free plan is too tight.

Limitations of Home Planner

  • The free plan is real but limited: 11 of our 60 most recent US reviews say too much sits behind PRO.
  • AI floor-plan recognition is a helper, not a surveyor: 6 of 60 reviews report misread dimensions on uploaded plans.
  • 3 of 60 reviews report freezes or glitches on large projects.

How to try Home Planner

  1. Install Home Planner free on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows or Mac.
  2. Draw the room, scan it with AR, or start from a photo of your floor plan.
  3. Furnish it from the 560,000+ item catalog and render the result in 3D.
  4. If you need the full catalog, PRO starts at €5.99/mo billed annually — every tier is on one public pricing page.
