One room, nine paint jobs: which walls and ceilings to paint light or dark to make a room look bigger, shorter, narrower, lower or cosier.

How to make a room look bigger with paint: one room painted nine ways, from all light walls and ceiling to all dark

Your room is long and narrow, or the ceiling feels too high, or the whole space feels bare. You cannot move the walls, but you can change how far away they look. Here is how to make a room look bigger with paint, or smaller and cosier, with one rule and nine ways to use it.

How does paint affect room size?

Dark paint brings a surface closer. Light paint moves it away. The eye reads a dark wall as nearer than it is and a light wall as further away, so the same room can look larger or smaller while its size stays the same.

That gives you two tools. Paint a surface light when you want to push it back. Paint it dark when you want to pull it in. The cover image shows one room painted nine ways. Each version uses the same rule on a different surface.

Nine ways to change a room with paint

  • Expand: all light. Walls and ceiling are pale, the corners fade, and the room reads as larger. The trade-off: without texture or colour in the furniture, the room can look unfinished.
  • Shorten: dark back wall. The far wall comes closer, so a long room or a corridor looks shorter and more even.
  • Tighten: dark side walls. The two long walls come in, so a wide, empty room looks narrower and more enclosed.
  • Stretch: dark walls, light ceiling. The walls close in and the ceiling moves away, so the room reads taller.
  • Lower: dark ceiling. The ceiling comes down, so a tall room feels lower and more intimate.
  • Stretch and lower: a dark upper band on the walls, light below. The band leads the eye along the walls and draws a lower line under the ceiling.
  • Detach: dark ceiling and side walls. Only the back wall stays light, so it moves away and the room looks deeper.
  • Enlarge: dark ceiling and back wall. The light side walls move apart, so a narrow room looks wider.
  • Compact: all dark. Every surface comes closer. The room feels smaller, warmer and more private.

Most rooms need only one of these. Pick the problem first, then the version that answers it:

What does a dark ceiling do to a room?

It makes the ceiling look lower. A dark ceiling comes down toward you, so a tall room feels more contained. Four of the nine versions use it: Lower, Detach, Enlarge and Compact.

The mistake to avoid: a dark ceiling in a room that is already low. There it closes the room from above, and the room feels smaller, not cosier. In a low room keep the ceiling light and put the colour on the walls instead.

How to make a room look cozier?

Bring the surfaces closer. Compact does it with every wall and the ceiling. Lower and Detach do it with fewer surfaces, so the room keeps some light.

A cosy room is not only dark. It also needs warm light from lamps at different heights, because one ceiling light makes dark walls look flat. Add textiles and wood to break up large dark areas.

Before you paint: look at a sample on two walls, in daylight and in the evening. A colour that is calm on a sunny wall can look much darker on the wall next to the window.

What paint cannot do

Paint changes how a room looks, not how it works. A dark back wall makes a corridor look shorter, but the furniture still has to fit. If the room feels small because there is too much in it, start with the layout, then choose the paint.

Try it on your plan in Home Planner

Measure the room and draw it in 2D/3D. Then select a wall, choose a new wall colour and apply it to one wall or to the ceiling. Compare the nine versions on your own room, furnish it with world-famous brands and render it, or use a ready-made layout. When you like one version, buy the paint.
